Why autumn is the best time to see Hunza

Autumn poplars along the road in Hunza, with Rakaposhi behind

Most travelers picture Hunza in spring, when the apricot and cherry blossoms are out. But locals will tell you autumn is the valley's best-kept secret.

From late September through October, the poplar, apricot and apple trees turn gold and red against the grey of Rakaposhi and the Karakoram peaks behind them. The summer rush has thinned out, so the roads, viewpoints and guesthouses are quieter, and rooms are usually easier to find.

When to go

Colour usually arrives first in the higher villages and works its way down the valley, so the exact peak shifts a little from year to year. Mid-October is the safest window for Karimabad and the villages around it; early October is better if you also want to go higher towards Passu and Khunjerab. If the dates matter to you, ask a local guesthouse what the trees are doing before you book.

What to see

Baltit and Altit forts look best in the low afternoon light, and the lanes of Karimabad are lined with trees at their most colourful. Eagle's Nest above Duikar is the classic sunset viewpoint, with the whole valley and the peaks spread out below. Along the Karakoram Highway, Attabad Lake and the Passu Cones are both worth a stop, and the clear autumn air makes the mountains far sharper than the hazier summer months do.

Weather and what to pack

Days are still pleasant, but nights drop close to freezing by late October and the mornings are properly cold. Layers are essential: a base layer, a fleece and a windproof jacket, plus a hat and gloves for early starts. Bring good walking shoes for the uneven stone streets of the Karimabad bazaar. Our packing list for northern Pakistan covers the rest.

Practical tips

Daylight gets short, so plan your longer drives for the morning and aim to reach your next stop before dark. Heating in guesthouses can be basic, so ask about blankets or a room heater when you book. Weather and road conditions on the highway can change, so keep a day or two spare in your plan rather than packing every day.

If you're planning a trip, our Hunza package is a good place to start, and we can adjust the dates to fit the autumn window.
